HARARE - Zimbabwean musician Alick Macheso has withdrawn from South Africa’s Silala Festival, citing xenophobic unrest and protests targeting foreign nationals.
The sungura star was scheduled to perform at the festival on July 11 alongside leading South African artists including Makhadzi.
In a statement released Saturday night, Macheso said he would not participate due to “the current security situation, protests, and unrest affecting foreign nationals in South Africa, circumstances which are entirely beyond our control.”
“Just for the record, ALL contractual and logistical arrangements had been completed, and we were fully prepared to attend the event. However, the safety and well-being of everyone involved remains our highest priority,” the statement read.
Macheso added: “We extend our sincere gratitude to the organizers and to all those who were looking forward to seeing us perform. We remain committed to joining you in the future once conditions improve and normality returns.”
He urged fans to “promote peace, unity, tolerance, and mutual respect during these challenging times. Music transcends borders, and together we can build stronger and more inclusive communities.”
The withdrawal follows backlash against Makhadzi over alleged comments regarding unrest in Zimbabwe. Makhadzi is scheduled to perform at Macheso’s upcoming show at Alex Sports Club in Harare.
Organizers of the Silala Festival had not issued a public response to Macheso’s withdrawal at the time of publication.
