DURBAN - Jacinta Ngobese, leader of the National Civic Movement and the group March and March, has proposed a solidarity march on July 31 in response to calls for demonstrations in Zimbabwe.
Posting on X, Ngobese wrote: “How about the 31st of July we March here in solidarity with Zimbabwe? So they don’t get beaten up for expressing themselves??”
The post followed demonstration calls by Zimbabwean activist Madzibaba Weshanduko. Ngobese indicated the march would be held in South Africa under her leadership of March and March, framing it as support for Zimbabweans facing crackdowns on expression.
As of Saturday, July 12, no formal notice had been filed with South African authorities. Details on the march’s location, permits, or participating partners were not included in the post.
The tweet has drawn thousands of views and mixed reactions online, with some users supporting the solidarity call and others questioning the impact of demonstrations held outside Zimbabwe.
Madzibaba Weshanduko, a street preacher known for anti-government protests in Harare, has previously urged citizens to demonstrate over economic and governance issues. Zimbabwean authorities have warned against unsanctioned protests under the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act.
Ngobese had not released additional logistics for the proposed July 31 march at the time of publication.
