CHIREDZI - Nine people were killed and 25 injured Tuesday morning when a train collided with a bus at a level crossing in Chiredzi, the National Railways of Zimbabwe said.
The crash occurred at about 7 a.m. as the train traveled from Triangle to the NRZ Lundi siding, NRZ said in a statement.
Preliminary information indicates the bus driver failed to stop at the level crossing to check for approaching trains, as required by law, NRZ said.
Seven adults and two minors on the bus died at the scene. The 25 injured passengers were taken to hospital for treatment.
The incident has renewed concerns about safety at railway crossings. NRZ urged motorists to strictly observe level crossing regulations to prevent further loss of life.
Authorities have not released the names of the victims.
